So the reworking of 'bush-warblers' leads to a spread across 5 plates, from p373, with some other species, eg Malia, Leaftoiler, tesias etc interspersed, but there are essentially 5 pages of small brown warblers. You hardly have to thumb through the whole book... cheers, alan

Are they really that far apart? - I'll check later, but I don't think there are any bush-warblers hiding in with the ducks. What other warblers? I was assuming people going birdwatching in Indonesia have some vague idea of the type of birds they might see in a given location. I'm clearly...

ie "'The birds of Melanesia' or 'The birds of Madagascar and Indian Ocean Islands" Have you compared the species numbers involved and thus the need for taxonomic order to take precedent over other approaches? The Indonesia guide has vastly more species than those two regions...

I disagree with almost your whole review but don't have time for a full reply. but I'll pick you up on this one: If you are trying to identify a bird in the forest, what are you doing looking at the INDEX?! Why not have a look at the bird, then look at the plates, see which one it looked...

Guy - if Josep has got some annual budget spare, can you plead with him to get those smaller tubenoses repainted? I'll have a go my self for a fee - if you pay extra, I'll hold the paintbrush in my hand as well. cheers, alan HBWAlive subscriber

One of the main reasons is that the English names of the various Flycatchers were not aligned with their true relationships - the new English names sort that out. cheers, alan

The majority of the illustrations are from the Lynx HBW and HBW alive set but there are obviously a large number of new illustrations for new taxa, split taxa and sub-species etc. James may know the exact number. A pity there was no repaint of some of the dreadful tubenoses - perhaps something...

I got my copy yesterday (direct from Lynx - surely the way to go) and it is magnificent. One early point, given the number of splits (Drongos! White-eyes!), it is then surprising where the conservative position is adopted, the obvious example being the Red-bellied Pitta group. One for the...

Mentawai Scops Owl has still got a yellow iris in that HBW image (they have a dark iris, see text or recent photos), surely it wouldn't be that difficult to amend this? cheers, alan

From I what I see from the cover on Lynx, this is going to use HBW Artwork - I wonder if James or anyone else can advise whether there are any new images, eg for new taxa, splits and so on. I would have preferred some of the other species, eg seabirds, to be repainted. I've got no doubt that...
