Norfolk birding (34 Viewers)

Maybe there is some hybrid remnant or just a freak that I am unaware of.
Are there, therefore any 'true' Golden left in Norfolk (considering the doubts over the Wolferton birds.

Their is a site near Lynford in an obscure part of the Thetford Forest that was still being used at the beginning of last year. Think its just into Norfolk as opposed to across the Suffolk border.

Out birding with Tim A again today. Long hours, no flowers though. Went to Berney - lots of birds (mostly lapwing) and mud, but a distinct lack of anything decent. Peregrine was about as good as it got, although there were quite a few Barnacle Geese, probably ferel. Lots of pinkies too, including a flock of about 3,000 next to the Acle straight, but bar a few whitefronts nothing better. Had a woodcock over the garage at the Acle roundabout just after I left Tim. Also reports of another Dark-breasted Barn Owl along the Acle straight but we didn't see it. Guess you've got to put in the hours to no avail sometime to appreciate it when it all comes good.

People might like to know that Tree Sparrows are still at Fulmodeston. Although difficult today I did eventually manage one. Hopefully they'll be easier when they start to investigate the nest boxes at the site as spring draws near.

Cheers
Chris

Hi All

Going to give the Shrike at Roydon another go tomorrow, but i notice that it has not been reported today. There has however, been one reported from Burnham Overy Staithe.

Does anyone know if the Roydon one is still there (it was reported yesterday) and/or any more details further to what is on RBA about the Burnham bird?

Cheers in advance

Mike

It was still there today. Make sure you get the right car park - it's the first one from the A road, and it more like an explanded driveway. It was viewable East of the car park today. Yesterday it was a short walk from the car park towards the beehives on the ridge.

re Golden Pheasant
One site near the arboretum held a few birds until last year but the understorey of box is now much thinner whether this is due to Muntjac or FC activities I do not know. Another site near Thompson Water that had them in the past but not now has similarly changed.
I made 4 visits to Wayland Wood last year for the atlas but did not have any.

re the phalarope

walk on the beach!

either north from Horsey or South from Waxham. Or along the dune tops. There's no need to struggle through the brambles around the old caravan site. The farm has just been taken over by new people. The last farmer was very anti-birder so people wandering around willy-nilly isn't a great idea at the moment (hence the pager message to watch from the dunes I think!). When I get to meet the new owners I hope to engender a more birder-friendly approach.

Pete - unfortunately you might have leave the pushchair at home - or put her in a rucksack!

A lot of miles through a lot of mud with an injured dog today! He's lying on the sofa with a swollen paw looking sorry for himself...

I saw the Dark-brested Barn Owl hunting with two 'normal' Barn Owls just east of Acle at 7.45 am. It was the darkness of the wings, witha more mottled effect that was most noticable (having looked for the one near Deream the night before and seeing a very dusky bodied bird but with 'normal' wings. About half an hour latter I had the 9 Whooper Swans flying SE over Horsey, where the female Ruddy Duck was still present (thanks Tim!), although I couldn't relocate it later.

From there I went onto the 'pipe dump' and watched the Grey Phalarope to a few feet with just two other birders, nice! Could ony find a few RtDiver on the sea. Three cranes were seen later south of the mill with four Tundra Bean Geese at the furthest north end of the pink-feet flock.

Tried Filby and Ormsby broads etc to little avail. Two Eurpoean White-fronts and a couble of Bewick's were all I could find as well (with good views of Chinese Water Deer - excluding the dead one!) I drove around Thrigby and couldn't find a single goose!
Finished off at Strumpshaw, where patience in the fen hide was rewarded with a 20 second glide past of the Bittern, full glow with the sun behind us, lovely!

re DB Barn Owl

the underwing coverts are a good pointer - very white on alba but buff or some grey-buff on guttata-type birds. Although there's so much variation it's hard to know what you're looking at, i think. It may be that some 'guttata'-type birds are just dark female Barns.

The Ludham bird could be seen in the day and there's an excellent photo on GYBC site. http://www.gybc.org.uk/year/photos2008.htm

I think we were in the right car park last week, but got there a little too late. We'll be going through Burnham OS anyway, so it will be worth stopping & having a look, but we'll still go to Roydon (it's always great to watch Hen Harriers - Shrike or no Shrike!). It will be one of my colleagues third try for this bird this year (and my second) so fingers crossed!

Visited Titchwell today for first time this year. Bought a years membership AND managed 7 year ticks. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside! The best of the bunch for me were the Redpolls. Had a pretty good call for a Mealy in there, but only had a 2 second view of it in the bins. Very white, streaked underparts were all I got on it before it split. Can I tick it? Your call! The Woodcock by the carpark was good too. First I've seen on the deck.

Back home and jumped on the bike to look for owls. Didn't manage any Long Eareds this time, but did have 1 Barn Owl, 2 Tawny's calling, 5 Bullfinches and 7 Woodcocks.

Had a trundle round north Norfolk today. Started at a windy Thornham at high tide; a female Merlin was hunting and 1+ Lapland were around the stubble field. Next stop Brancaster; here had absolutely terrific views of the Twite - 55 of them! Lots of them are colour-ringed. Continuing east ticked White-crowned Sparrow at Cley - was showing most of the time I was there. Salthouse beach produced 40 Snow Buntings at point blank range. The afternoon was spent wild goose chasing around Saxlingham. Ross`s Goose amongst the thousands of Pinks, but no Beans.

Fantastic day's birding on my birthday today - it was an unusual birthday as its usually snowing, but today was a glorious sunny, beautiful day. Started off at Holme at 9.30am, stunning walk along 'my' beach! with nobody else on it but me, I noticed a massive flock of waders at the far end by Thornham channel and proceeded to walk towards them, when all of sudden the whole flock got up and disappeared - as I thought.... couple with a dog dispersed the whole lot:C, so crossed over to the dunes and up to post 10 (corner of Thornham bank), there were loads of pinkfeet and greylags grazing the Holme marshes - then walked back along top boards overlooking broadwater, few tufted duck on here. Went and had a chat with Sophie and Jed and they very kindly gave me an extremely amusing, rude birdy card which they had obviously spent alot of time creating. Didn't see much on the sea, except great crested grebe and a fulmar, oh and 1 long tailed duck going east. Fieldfare and brambling on the reserve.

Went onto Titchwell (12.30pm) to meet up with my friend Pete and his two friends Graham and Glyn. Arrived in carpark and I have never seen so many cars in the carpark! Viewed the woodcock along the entrance track on route and then along the main path Ray Kimber kindly pointed out a Mealy and Lesser Redpoll in the alders behind the feeders - also siskens! which was very nice. Continuing along the main path (my friends were on the beach at this point) I saw a Med. Gull which was showing nicely, 1 bearded tit shot into the reeds and also reed bunting. A very amusing incident then happened! a very dishy young man who was not a birder was walking towards me and as he walked past he said 'a glamorous twitcher, you don't often see that!' - that did make me smile:-O. Straight after this, suddenly, somone ran along side me and excited voices were saying 'where abouts exactly' and scopes hurridly being set up - couldn't believe my luck, a Red Kite was gliding over Ringstead Mill!!!!!!!!! - most definately bird of the day! What more can a girl want on her birthday! I phoned Pete and co about the red kite and they picked it up further along the path too which was good. Had a lovely leisurely lunch and sat outside and then finished off the day at Holme Marsh Reserve with 2 Barn Owls, 2 Marsh Harriers, a sparrowhawk, 2 little egrets, 1 cormorant and a water rail.

Thank you to ever found the Red Kite!;)

I then went to my parents for tea and cakes and now back home.

Best Wishes Penny:girl:

Most importantly it gave me the opportunity to meet up with Richard Porter and present the painting of the WCS to the Bendings and they seemed a bit taken aback and I got the feeling that they really loved the picture and so will treasure it. In fact it was a significant birthday for Sue Bending recently, so this was an unexpected surprise for them. I believe the collection bucket has raised over £3500 now as well. :t: On the way back to the village hall car park we also had a sparrowhawk cross in front of us.

I bet they were bowled over with your picture - an extremely kind, generous thing to do - I mean't to comment on your picture when you posted it the other day, it is absolutely brilliant, your work is unique, keep using those pastels!!! I went to art college many years ago and I found pastels the most difficult medium to master, so even more credit to you.

Best Wishes Penny:girl:

Thank you for birthday wishes Kittkat

Nice one with the Kite Penny glad you had a good birthday.

Connor

Thanks Connor.

I saw a very sad sight on Thursday - on my way to Norwich (driving job for work) I saw a dead otter on the verge about 1/4 of a mile from the sign for Little Fransham (think that was the name of the village):-C
