Threat to prime steppe bird species habitat in Spain (1 Viewer)

A proposed airport site at Ciudad Real (some 180 km from Madrid) threatens to destroy the integrity of central Spanish steppe habitats, home to several important populations of bird species such as Great Bustard, Little Bustard, Stone-Curlew, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse and Lesser Kestrel. SEO/BirdLife Spain have asked for support for their campaign to prevent the airport being built within an IBA and immediately adjacent to an SPA. In addition to the bird species listed above, the habitat, feeding areas and population of up to 60 other protected species could be at varying risk.

BirdLife Spain emphasise that they are not against the construction of an airport in the region, which will boost the economic infrastructure. They are however campaigning for an adequate stand-off distance from the SPA/IBA and consider the Environmental Impact Assessment to be both inadequate and superficial. They have protested to the EC for a second time.

Completed (in seconds).

Thanks for this, first I have heard of it, I just hope it has the correct outcome.

I only got the SEO plea indirectly Jules. My US coordinator picked it up on the Birdwatch mailing list.
