So today I went to see a pair of stationary Two-barred Crossbills (male and female). Once there I found another fellow birder and within 10 minutes we managed to find the Two-Barred among the 40-50 Common Crossbills residing in the trees. It was great, I have always had trouble to find crossbills and now suddenly I saw them everywhere.
So now my task was to try to find a Parrot Crossbill. I know they usually lurk among Common Crossbills so I gave it a shot. However neither me or the other 10 people on the spot managed to find any Parrot Crossbill. But when I got home I saw that a guy that was there just 10 min before us had seen a parrot in the bunch. I guess we lacked the experience to find it in the bunch, no big white stripes on the wings
So, is the Two-Barred rare where you live and how do you do to tell what is parrot or common CB? Big beak, strong neck?
