Bare with me, I don’t know anything about birds.

What it looked like, chickadees (cute tiny black white birds) nested in my 3 ft ground planter with a small furn in it. Laid 5 white eggs with brown speckles on them. Ive kept my distance the entire time. Had a feeling the nest being so low to the ground a raccoon would get to it. The eggs managed to stay their 2 weeks and must of just hatched 3 days ago.

I had not been near or seen the nest since. Today my husband noticed nothing in the nest or around, he said they must of been eaten. 3 hours later I go to the backyard to find all 5 chicks dead on the cement, when my husband saw nothing! No egg shells anywhere! They look like they must be 3 days old, no feathers and see through skin. I have a photo but not sure if it’s appropriate to post or not.

Why did this happen!?

Thank you.

Unfortunately, breeding season brings on a lot of animals that use nestlings for food. Squirrels, cats (if the nest is low) raccoons, etc. The fact that you found them indicates they were not killed for food in my thoughts anyway. Very sad and I'm sorry for what has happened to the chicks.

Hi Chickadee and a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum :t:

We’re glad you found us and please join in wherever you like ;)
