kumlien's gull? (1 Viewer)

Spotted this gull in Ireland this month.Kumlien's gull?Thanks in advance.

Yet this one is labelled Kumlien's, despite having white-tipped primaries . . . what's the difference?

Well for a start Kumlien's will be the default ssp for that location and the variation means that you would have to see the open wing and the tail to make a call. First winters are hard, especially subtle birds. The op's bird looks like a well marked Iceland but tbh I'm not sure you can rule Kumlien's out but given the UK location and what you can see I'd start with Iceland.

It's a glaucoides. Note the typical dark arrows on outer primaries
So when/how does a 'dark' glaucoides become a 'pale' kumlieni? Has anyone ever followed the plumage progression of known colour-ringed birds to see what birds like this become as adults? And isn't it clinal variation, anyway?
