From Conserv@tion today for those who don't know already:
Warning to beware of bats after rabies case
People were warned last night by the Government to keep away from all sick or injured bats amid fears that rabies, which can be passed on to humans, is now present in Britain’s bat population. Tests on an injured animal in Lancashire have proved positive. Three people have died of the disease on the Continent since 1977. Experts are trying to find the source of the virus and to estimate the scale of the disease in the UK. Government vets are working with Department of Health officials to ensure that there is no threat to human health and that anyone who may have come into contact with diseased bats has received medical treatment.
