Is the first a Large? Which makes the second a lesser?

I'd say both are Large.

I would say #2 is a Pearly Underwing.

#2 definitely had a yellow underwing with a black bar when it flew.

I'd say they were both Large but there is a chance the second is Lunar YU - you'd need to check the underwing to be sure though.

With those strong sub-apical black marks they can really only be Large Yellow Underwings.
