New Sony NEX series of mirroless cameras another serious contender for digiscoping? (1 Viewer)

See links for review/demo of a high spec camera, 16mm pancake or 18 - 55mm lens for Digiscoping would possibly work?

i like the idea of full HD, angled screen, takes SDHC as well as Sony memory card

price will be key for possible buyers?

Paul

oooh, now that looks interesting :smoke:

  • With a bit of luck the 18-55mm will work for digiscoping
  • the screen looks awesome: great resolution, big, and tiltable
  • camera settings and controls look like they might cause us a few headaches
  • AVCHD 1080i video in the nex5: bonus! (and can take an external microphone)
  • 25 multi point contrast AF. sounds very promising
  • APS-C sensor
  • 7fps continuous shooting (locked AF)
  • no viewfinder

I think Swaro, Zeiss, and Leica need to come out with LER (>30mm) eyepiece(s) and low mag video adapters like Kowa and Nikon have done so digiscopers can make full use of these new class of mirror-less dSLRs.

The imaging-resource link in Paul's post didn't work for me, so I found one that did:

Interesting that they've moved the image stabilization back to the lens - I thought that in-camera was one plus that Sony had in their DSLRs. I see no long lenses are on the horizon and MF only if you adapt existing Sony / Minolta lenses (not so much a digiscoping issue, but something I've been hoping for in the Panasonic G series).

it seems Sony will have a firmware upgrade in "summer 2010" which will give the camera limited 3D capabilities:

The NEX-5 and NEX-3 are the first α cameras featuring Sweep Panorama. Just press the shutter button and swing the camera side-to-side or up and down. A high-speed burst of frames is stitched together automatically to create detail-packed 23 megapixel panoramas with a 226 degree effective angle of view4. Panoramic files can also be enjoyed in stunning 3D on compatible BRAVIA™ 3D televisions.(see press release)

An Austrian newspaper says they will be available at the end of June with kit prices (incl objective) starting at €499.

The same newspaper ran a story yesterday about an interchangeable-lens camcorder that will have the same APS(C) sensor and take the same objective lenses announced for the NEX3 and NEX5 cameras. I can only presume the camcorder will also take the 18-200mm tele objective mentioned in the dpreview report, which would make this a very very interesting camcorder. The camcorder should launch in "Autumn 2010".

A good digiscoping camera ??? I am not impressed by many of these images. CA false color is an irritation. There is no body mount on the front, which is a must for me. No sloppy clamps nor pod mounts please. Mounting to the lens???? Well, how easy does the lens pull apart, as has been seen with other lenses. Vibration caused by the floppy focal plain shutter can very well be a problem also. Yes, I know, there is no mirror slap. So we will see, but my LX3 will be tough to beat for digiscoping. Gene
