The Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture) was a common inhabitant of the Cantabrian range, across northernmost Spain, until the 19th century but disappeared early in the 20th century. A reintroduction programme began there in 2010 in the Picos de Europa. The Asturian sector has just seen the first hatching of a chick in the Picos for at least 70 years, according to the Spanish newspaper El País today. Good news indeed.
