Here are some snaps of the same fly from our garden.

Originally wondered if it might be a Noon Fly but I cannot see that this has an orange abdomen. Googled fly with orange abdomen and came up with Trichopoda pennipes which isn't in any of my books.

Also checked on variants from Noon Fly family but these did not have the orange abdomen.

Nowickia ferox (Panzer, [1809]), Trichopoda pennipes looks quite different and afaik is unrecorded in Britain, it is though also a Tachinid
