Scrub Jays (1 Viewer)

Young birder
Hi i've been birding Florida for awile now though I am yet to see a Florida Scrub Jay. Truth is i've never really looked. So my question to you guys is: What is the most reliable location to see a Florida Scrub Jay? Preferably an area on or close to the Treasure Coast (Indian River County, St. Lucie County, Martin County, and Palm Beach County) Also if you know of any areas where guided tours are scheduled I would like to hear about those to.

Any tips on spotting them would also be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Trey - you should subscribe to the Yahoo email group for Florida birding, which will keep you up to date with various happenings - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FlaBirding/.

As well as the group's general news and bird sightings, you can pick up a lot of detailed help on sites - where to go, where to look, etc.

Specifically on Scrub Jays, you can find info here http://www.fnai.org/FieldGuide/pdf/Aphelocoma_coerulescens.PDF

here http://www.brevardcounty.us/environmental_management/wildlife_scrub_jay.cfm

or here (huge amount of detail on locations) http://share2.myfwc.com/scrubjay/Lists/FLSJ Locations/AllItems.aspx

As far as ease of finding them, I like Merritt Island (around the Playalinda Beach ranger booths is pretty certain - they come to you) and Archbold seems to be a sure thing as well, although I haven't been there.

Saw my first last fall at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, near Jupiter. Ask park staff where they have been seen recently (they directed me to the campground area near the amphitheater and bingo, there one was!).

Best,
Jim

Thanks Lockbreeze926 and J. Moore! I'll join that group it sounds like a great place for info. I think i'm going to try Jonathan Dickinson first because of the ease of access and its relativley close to where I live. I'll keep let you know if I find one.

Keep an eye out for Bachman's Sparrow at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, as well. They are singing this time of year in pineland areas with a Saw Palmetto understory.
