"Ben" Waller's fossil Terror bird (1 Viewer)

walleri as in:
• in the extinct, very extinct, (true) fossil terror bird "Titanis walleri" BRODKORB 1963 (here)

= Benjamin "Ben" I. Waller (d. 1994), of Ocala, Florida, a k a “Father of Underwater Archeology and Paleontology”, Navy Jet pilot, race car driver, judo instructor, herpetologist, Hollywood stuntman, Scuba diver legend, fossil collector (of the holotype, during the winter 1961-62) .... etc., etc..

Sounds like a guy that makes many other collectors, except maybe Burton, Meinerzhagen, and a few other "Wild ones" (and certainly a, more or less, deskbound guy like myself) look quite whimpy!

Not (and it most likely never will be ;)) included in today's HBW Alive Key. Nor is Titanis ("new genus", in the above OD). This bird vanished from the face of Earth some 3 million years ago.

Cheers!

Titanis walleri was described by Pierce Brodkorb, 1963, not BROADKORB 1963. (William Pierce Brodkorb 29/9/1908-19/7/1992). a famous American Avian paleontologist.

The North-American Titanis walleri and the African Lavocatavis africana Mourer-Chauviré, Tabuce, Mahboubi, Adaci et Bensalah, 2011 are the only Phorusrhacidae Ameghino, 1899 found outside South-America.

Titanis walleri was found in the Late Pliocene of Florida, and the Pleistocene of Texas.
