Does anyone have any advice on the best places to do a bit of birding in and around Vienna in early June?

Not familiar with birding in Vienna, but I would suggest you´re visiting the NP Neusiedler See/Seewinkel.
SE of Vienna.

Hi Stuart

The Schonnbrunn Palace is good for woodpeckers and flycatchers.

Ta very much - I love woodpeckers (indeed we spend a lot of our time chasing Green ones around the local park - with generally poor photographic results).

I'll be heading to the palace gardens then Also the Tiergarten and the Vienna Woods - possibly the Donau nature reserve as well, if I can persuade herself...
