Injured wild bird (1 Viewer)

Hi I just had a bird fly into the side of my car
I don't know what kind off bird it is or how to take care of it.
It's small with a long narrow orange beak brown and black spots on body and a purple neck .
I've brought it home and put it in a large box with hay and some grass with a hot water bottle .
Any suggestions or help please

Can you take a picture of it?

Hi there and a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum :t:

Hi thanks for your message I've been trying but it won't let me upload it.
I've been trying to find one on Google the closet thing I've seen is a purple sandmartain not sure though.
I've put him in a large box with some hay and grass with a hot water bottle in a quiet room .
Is that a good idea

It may be too large so if you can crop it or reduce it in size that might help. The best way to upload a pic is to go down to the bottom of this page and click on "Go Advanced" Then scroll down until you come across the drop down that says "manage attachments" and then click on that and another small window will open up and click on Browse and find it where you saved it and then click on upload.

Hi Horseireland and a warm welcome from me too.

If you're having difficulty uploading your picture, it could be that it is too big, so this may help

Re-sizing Pictures:

After you've done any other work on your pic (always a copy mind ) and cropped away any part of the picture you don't want, you can then re-size it. But don't crop to get the file size you want.

How you actually do it depends on what programs you have.

In Windows 7 you can right click on the image and there's an option to re-size (choose the smallest 800x600 - you can go bigger 1032 on the longest side I think, but Windows doesn't give you that option!). Adobe Photoshop: you have a better choice there, in the Image menu: Resize, you can actually choose the size you want, and the quality... always select medium.

Window 8: Right click on the image and select Edit from the drop down. Then select Image from the menu in the Paint programme that opens. You can then type in the number of pixels for the longest side. I usually choose 900 but you can go up to 1032.

Alternatively you could download the free program called Picassa.

If you use a Mac, this page shows you how to do it: http://www.howtogeek.com/201638/use-your-macs-preview-app-to-crop-resize-rotate-and-edit-images/

I hope one of these ideas work for you. If not, try posting in the Computer subforum - I'm sure someone will have more suggestions for you. There's loads of methods depending what software you have.

To upload your pictures, first make sure they're around 900 to 1000 pixels on the longest side. Save a copy to your desktop.

To upload the pictures in a thread, make sure you're in an advanced posting mode, either by starting a new thread, or by clicking on Post Reply.

After you've typed your comment, scroll down below the message pane and you will see a grey Manage Attachments button.

Click on that and then Browse for your first picture and double click on it. Click on Upload and wait a few seconds until you see the filename appear in the box.

You can do this 4 more times for each post (the maximum is 5 pictures per post, but there is no limit in the thread).

Close the box.

You can check the pictures are there if you click on Preview.

When you submit your post the pictures should appear at the bottom.

Do come back if you need more assistance.

We have some general guidelines here for the care of injured birds.

Please let us know how you get on.

I just managed to upload it to the gallery under the tittle injured wild bird. Category was wild birds England Europe.
Don't know if you can see it there
Sorry I can't seem to do it any other way

Any ideas what type off bird it is or how best to look after it I have horses and dogs but I know nothing about birds lol
But it's a cool little guy and I'd like to help it if I can

Well done Horseireland. I just replied to your image in the Gallery.

It's a Water Rail, so I guess you've a wetland nearby with some reed beds.

They eat small fish, snails and insects.
Maybe try it with sardines with any sauce washed off.....

Hopefully it is just stunned and will recover. If not take it to a vet, they don't normally charge for helping wild animals and birds.

Thanks for all the advice brought him to specialist vet this morning in the new forest he said to call tomorrow to see how hes doing.
Hopefully it will be good news.
Is it best to release him close to where I found him obviously not the Rd lol.
But he came from one of our fields it's wet and marshy with a stream and it's quiet.

Thanks for the update Horseireland - let's hope you have good news tomorrow.

Yes, release near the spot you found him, but that marshy ditch area sounds ideal habitat for this species.

Hope the water rail is OK - they are one of my favourite birds! Theses things are really tricky so don't beat yourself up if things do not turn out well.

Do you have an I-pad? If so I have found the easiest way of uploading photos to be:

Transfer your photos to the ipad or cloud.
Email them to yourself - on the iPad you select the photo press the email button and it automatically resizes them.
Tap on the photo in your email to download.
Long tap to save.
Then when you do the manage attachment thing the last photo in your All photos section will the the resized one :)

Hi guys happy to say it's alive and well and living in a reserve in the new forest apparently it sprung to life one day so they had to release it immediately .
But bird watchers have reported that it's settled in nicely and has been spotted numerous times since it's release .
I'm going to go down there myself to make sure I'll let you know

Oh that's wonderful news Horseireland - thanks so much for letting us know.
