Thanks for that - covers a number of species byt how do I record them as mp3 files to take with me to Oz? Anyone know?

Australia doesn't really have a good online bird-sound repository. The market is dominated by a number of commercial cds of varying quality. Have a look on: http://www.thebirdingshop.com/ where they have some details on a few of the products available.

All tapes of the "Field Guide to Australian Birdsong" have been converted to CD... that would solve your problems! It will set you back 170 pounds (http://wildsounds.com/), but it's a fine investment!
