I saw a one-legged curlew today. There was no sign of a stump, so I assume it was tucked up under its body. The bird was part of a group. Every time time there was a gust of wind the poor thing had to flap its wings to retain its balance. It was quite a sad sight, hopping about as the tide advanced. It was otherwise in good shape.
Does anyone know how it could have come to lose this limb? I don't suppose it could have been bitten off by a fish? Entanglement in a net, perhaps? I'm baffled.
