Can someone please identify this bird - is it a Hepatic or Summer Tanager? Taken at Paraiso Quetzal Lodge (San Gerardo de Dota) in Costa Rica in January.
Thanks
Chris

Agree that it's a tough angle. The bill looks much better for Summer to me, but the apparent darker area between eye and bill would support Hepatic.

I'd say Summer, but I'm not sure.

Disclaimer: I have much more experience with summer than hepatic tanager. I get little summer feel for this bird (so lean more towards hepatic).

I definitely am in the Summer camp. The head and body is completely red without the gray tones of Hepatic and the bill is yellowish and large. This is just about the time Summer starts arriving down this way.

edit: whoops location... I wasn't paying attention on that arriving comment. still Summer
