Cristian's list for 2011 season (1 Viewer)

Hi, Cristian!!! :hi:

I see you are including Moths too in your thread, how interesting!!! I'm useless with Moths, now I have a book of the Spanish Moths but I'm unable to ID most of them, just they look all the same to me! :-C

Hope you finally manage to snap one of those Whites, I'd love to know what they are! ;)

Cheers! B :)

April 22nd.

It was a great day. Despite the strong wind, I managed to take pics with three Whites. I suppose all are Green-veined Whites, but I need your help Marian! Just when I had decided to leave the meadow a small beauty landed on a flower, near my last White - a Small Yellow Underwing (see the pic attached). On the way to home, I found another new butterfly species for this season - a Red Admiral.
No problem with the moth IDs, Marian - we have a lot of experts here on birdforum.;)

Hi again, Cristian!!! :hi:

I've checked your Whites, pics 1 and 4 are Green-veined Whites for me (specially in 4, there is no possibe doubt whatever, ;)).

I'm not so sure about pics 2 and 3, specially number 3 I'd go for Small White, but I'm not sure without a view of the underwing (Whites are much easier to ID by the underwing but I understand not always they cooperate for that kind of view).

In Romania there are other Whites we don't have, but I don't know if they are common and easy to find. Maybe yours is something else and not Small White! :h?:

Thank you for comments, Marian. By the way, I forgot to write about another species seen yesterday (I have an excuse - I don't have pictures with this one). I was very surprised to see an Old World Swallowtail! I suppose is relative early for this species. Also this isn't a very common species here. Scarce Swallowtail is more common...

During the Easter Hollyday I was in a hilly area in Transylvania (200 kilometers from Bucharest). I saw a lot of butterflies there: Peacock, Wood White (http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=198549), Green-veined White, Short-tailed Blue (http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=198525), Map, Old World Swallowtail (http://www.birdforum.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/364107/ppuser/54311), Duke of Burgundy, Brimstone, Orange Tip (no photo!), Dingy Skipper (http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=198551), another Skipper (I'm not sure about the species - see the picture attached - maybe a Grizzled Skipper?), an unidentified large orange/brown butterfly (no photos - maybe a Fritillary of some kind?). Here are some pictures.

WOW, Cristian, beautiful pictures, and how lucky of you... I've only seen Map Butterfly once in my life, and Duke of Burgundy never!!! o:) So imagine how green with envy I am!!! o:D

As for the Skipper, I don't know the Eastern species but yours reminds me of the Grizzled Skipper. Was it very small? The only one I've seen (that I'm certain it was the Grizzled Skipper) was a tiny thing, and the pattern was like yours.

I'm going to try to update my thread now too! ;)

Cheers! B :)

Butterflies: Map, Orange Tip, Scarce Swallowtail, Old World Swallowtail, Holly Blue, Grizzled Skipper, Peacock, Comma, Green-veined White, an unindentified Skipper (I will start a new thread to solve this problem...).
Moths: Common Heath, Burnet Companion, Thyris fenestrella.

P.S. The second Skipper seems to be a worn Dingy.

You'll have to visit Romania. Both Map and Duke of Burgundy are relative common species here.

If I could I'd take the first plane leaving for your country right now!!! o:D

And that Lunar Thorn is an utter beauty, wow, I didn't know it!!! o:)

I'll keep coming here regularly to check how you are doing with your Butterflies sightings! o:) Cheers, Cristian! B :)

Friday (May 6th) afternoon I visited a marsh area near Bucharest. I saw only a very few butterflies/moths (as a matter of fact I saw 3 or 4 moths species). I identified two of them (thank you again, Harri): Sitochroa verticalis and Euclidea glyphica.

May 11th - a visit in the same area as on May 6th. Again, a very few moths (only 2 species) and no butterflies (we had some really cold days for May in the last week). For the first time this season: The Four-spotted moth.

o:) Cristian, that Four-spotted Moth looks very close to one I photographed long time ago and I never even tried to know what it was... I must check the pics, I have the feeling you've IDed a Moth for me! ;)

And loads of congrats on the Green-underside Blue, here they have appeared about a week ago but for the moment I only spotted one (I don't see many in the season though)...
