    Swainson's Hawk

I originally identified this as a Broad-winged Hawk, but the wings and tail are too long and face pattern better fits juvenile light morph Swainson's. .
  10. The Traveler

    The Traveler

Spotted a rather large flock (20-30) of Swainsons Hawks traveling through the area last week on their way back South.
  11. Long Haul

    Long Haul

The Swaisons Hawk is the king of Buteo migration traveling from Southern South America all the way up to Alaska ever year. Am fortunate to have a stop over spot in the desert for them and so many other species. This pic was zooomed/cropped hence the lower resolution but it really captures this...

    Swainson's Hawk-Light Phase Juvenile

Third shot of one of a pair of juvies who were nice enough to let me take a lot of pictures. I got about 50 shots of them before they finally flew away when I got out of the car.
  18. Swainson's Hawk-Light Phase Juvenile

    Swainson's Hawk-Light Phase Juvenile

Front shot of one of the two juvies I found along the road Monday. Love this color phase.
  19. Swainson's Hawk-Light Phase Juvenile

    Swainson's Hawk-Light Phase Juvenile

Coming out of the Rockies I came upon a pair of juvenile hawks sitting on consecutive fence posts. They stayed there when I stopped and gave me shots of their back, front and side......very accomodating. The coloring was quite striking and very different from the full adults.
  20. Swainson's Hawk-Light Phase

    Swainson's Hawk-Light Phase

There are a lot of Swainson's around right now....both light and dark phase. I have gotten quite a few pics of some, but this one was one of the nicer ones.

    Swainson's Hawk

This bird was watching a farmer bale his hay....I'm sure he got a few tasty morsels that were hiding in the windrows!
