    Immature gull ID, England

I am continually baffled by immature large gulls that were all known as Herring Gulls when I was learning my birds many decades ago. This one doesn't look like a straightforward argenteus to me, but I'm having trouble placing it. Perhaps some hybrid combination? When I first saw it I thought I...

    Caspian gull face

I am part of a group that catches, ID's, colour-rings and releases gulls on a landfill in Essex. Last Saturday we caught a beautiful adult (probably quite old) Caspian gull. It beautifully illustrated all the classic ID features, and this head shot shows some of them. Orange orbital ring and...

Here are some more Caspian Terns that I captured this week.
  10. Caspian Tern

    Caspian Tern

A capture at my favorite lake. They apparently are migrating back through going South. White body and black cap makes them a hard capture to make.

    Caspian Terns

I was surprised to see these birds at my favorite lake today. I was able to capture some images when the adults passed through on 4-22-13, on their spring migration. I did not expect to see them again until sometime in September. As you can see, they are a mixture of adults and juveniles.

    Caspian Tern

Another migrant and new to me. Taken at one of our local lakes.

    Caspian Tern (nonbreeding adult)

Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia) Two subspecies have been described besides the nominate but both are usually considered to be invalid. Photographed along the Gulf of Mexico between Boca Chica and the Rio Grande, Cameron County, Texas, USA.

In the same location we saw Caspian Terns, with thicker darker red bill.
