  3. Wee fluff b*m

    Wee fluff b*m

Excuse the language, couldn't think of a better title at the time LOL. There were a few of these foraging under the watchful eye of mum Maned Duck. Think I may have told you before about their confused nomenclature, variously known as Maned Goose and Australian Wood Duck.
  4. An attractive oddity

    An attractive oddity

This is the one that's not sure if it's duck or goose. They are on the large size for a duck and appear to have the bill of a goose. This means that they are the only representatives in the genus Chenonetta (making this a monotypic genus). Maned Ducks are fairly widespread in Australia.
  5. Grazer

    Grazer

The last picture of our trip out was a Maned Duck chomping on the grass beside Oyster Harbour. These poor ducks, no-one seems to know what they are, as an alternative name for them is Maned Goose! A very interesting and full day, actually as were most days of my trip LOL.
  6. The complex ones

    The complex ones

We'd now got round the bay and stopped at Steppings Pond. Which seems to hold quite a number of species, and plenty of them too. Here's some Maned Duck, taking absolutely no notice of us, enjoying the taste of fresh grass. Yes, very complex. They can't decide if they ducks or geese, for...
  7. Before breakfast

    Before breakfast

Up early so I went out for a wander down to the river front to see what else had risen. On the grass in front of the ferry were a Maned Duck and Eurasian Coot grazing companionably.

  11. An oddity

    An oddity

The Maned Duck is so unusual, it's the only species in the Genus. The short bill makes it look like a goose, so an alternative name is Maned Goose. However it's also known as a Australian Wood Duck . Makes life difficult, doesn't it. But I don't mind - I think they're really handsome. Doc has...
  12. Muddled....

    Muddled....

.... and who can blame Maned Ducks for that!!! They've two other common names, one of which is Maned Goose! So people can't decide what family they belong to LOL. Hence the scientific name of Chenonetta is a monotypic genus, meaning no other species shares it. Lengthening shadows meant the...
  13. Maned Duck (Chenonetta jubata)

    Maned Duck (Chenonetta jubata)

The Australian Wood Duck, Maned Duck or Maned Goose Duck (Chenonetta jubata), as the name suggests it has Australian origins. Therefore, It arrived in my lake in a completely accidental way. All the accidental observations and which are frequent, are however limited to the migratory periods...

  15. End of the day

    End of the day

The sun setting, and with the light failing fast I wanted another wander around the grounds before bed. A pair of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, had joined a group of Maned Ducks in the front garden; here they are with one of the females.
  16. Pairing up

    Pairing up

Two of the Maned Ducks took themselves off for a little swim away from the group.
  17. Ducks or Geese?

    Ducks or Geese?

This is a most unusual species, as there's really nothing else like them. They seem to be a cross between a duck and a goose as the alternative common names indicate. Most naming authorities use Maned Duck, but some call them Maned Goose, but to add to the confusion others use Australian Wood...

    Family outing

  19. Having a wander

    Having a wander

As you can see from my tags, this, what most call a Maned Duck, goes by two other names. An unusual species as there are no other birds in the genus.
  20. Nagging

    Nagging

The Cattle Egret on the left seems to have a lot to say, or perhaps he's complaining about the presence of the Maned Ducks behind. I had to stand on tip toes to rake this picture, as there was a bank and shrubs in the way. I've not seen any Cattle Egrets in Scotland (some in England) it it was...
  21. Identity Crisis

    Identity Crisis

This one doesn't know if he's a duck or a goose, as he also goes under the names of Australian Wood Duck and Maned Goose. The only member of the genus Chenonetta.

These birds are so common and so easy to photograph that inevitably they are ignored a lot of the time!!
