    Common Darter (immature male)

Birding is on the slow side right now. Watching and and photographing dragonflies is a nice alternative and equally interesting/challenging. Here is a male immature Common Darter.

    The Last Dragonfly

...from 2009 For Aki who liked the last one I posted with wood in the background. Edit: Thanks to Bellow and IanF for helping to correct the ID. I had a look in the field guide and am now quite convinced it's a Common Darter.

Though possibly not the same individual. Edit: Thanks to Tony for the ID
  7. Hello there

    Hello there

Common darters are one of the easiest to photograph and don't seem to mind a lens poked right in front of their face. I got some even closer photos but the breeze was enough to mean that the focus wasn't on the face as I had intended.

I could even put my Nikon coolpix right in front of the dragonfly without it flying off.

These dragonflies were basking in the Sun and quite easy to capture. One even landed on my left hand.

A very warm, sunny, late October afternoon so it was not too surprising to see this Common Darter still surviving.

    Common Darter on a Wire

Good numbers around today including about twenty, males and females, using this wire fence as a resting place. I was struck by how the background colours matched this mature female.
