house sparrow (f)

    Housewife

Near the Nutcracker there was also a flock of House Sparrows eating seeds from some tall weeds. I got a couple good close-ups of this female.

What are the signs a young house sparrow has imprinted itself on its human caregiver?

What are the signs that a young house sparrow, or any young bird for that matter, has imprinted itself on a human caregiver? Not a hatchling just born but a fledgling that I had taken in after noticing she had an injury to one of her wings. In the past two weeks her wing has improved and isn't...

    Universally variable

I've been intrigued by JPMenon's photos of House Sparrows in southern India. This is one species found on pretty much all continents (except, I would guess, Antarctica). And it's certainly recognizable everywhere you see them, and yet not quite the same. For instance, the ones in southern India...
  8. Count me in!

    Count me in!

Last round of the waterbird count. On the first round we were only supposed to count the mallards. But most of us counted all the species we saw, so after that we called it the waterbird count rather than the mallard count ... and we stretched the concept of waterbirds to include all...

    Fall cold and gold

All fluffed up against the cold and framed by berries and birch leaves.
  10. "I don't get it"

    "I don't get it"

This sparrow seems a bit puzzled: "Why are those Waxwings so enthusiastic about with these sour berries?" I've never seen any birds other than the Waxwings or Fieldfares eat these whole, but I have seen Greenfinches, Tits, and occasionally House Sparrows nibble at the wee bits that are...

    SF - Bashful

Almost done editing that book. Deadline is Tuesday. Now just waiting for the summary chapter from a co-editor, so had some time tonight to catch up a bit on BF and post some Saturday Fun shots. Will be spending Saturday taking a flatbread baking class, then back to work on the book. Deadline is...

Scraping larvae off the birch leaves

That's what this house sparrow was doing - very systematically, leaf by leaf and branch by branch. If you look closely, you can see the leaves have some insect damage and the sparrow has little green larvae in her beak. OK. That's 3 quick posts from me. It's only 9:30 pm local time, but 5:30 am...

    Clutching at straws

A new neighbor. We're waiting for another new neighbor to start building their house on the site split off the next door garden. This gal, however, isn't waiting for a building permit, or for the ground to thaw, or for the contractor to fit it into his busy schedule. She's just getting it done...

    Watchful

Keeping an eye on the feeder. Can't be too careful.
  17. Spotlit sparrow

    Spotlit sparrow

Thursday the clouds were quite dark, but the apple bush by the feeders was full of sparrows so I gave it a try. Just briefly, a thin beam of sunshine broke through the clouds and lit up this sparrow from behind, including a hint of a gleam in its eye. There are some other decent shots from...

    House Sparrow (F)

I am not totally certain but his beak is the feature I have based most of this ID on. The faint markings on his head I am thinking will get darker and more destinguishable as he get more mature. If anyone can shed more light on this fellow I would appreciate any other suggestions.
