    Red-winged Starling

This is a male; females are similar but have a gray head. This species was originally confined to cliffs and gorges for nesting, but now also takes advantage of buildings and other man-made structures in urban areas. Two subspecies are usually recognized. Red-winged starling

I did get at least one shot of a Red-winged starling where you can see a hint of red on his wing. Shot up against an overcast glare, so not a great pic, but since my previous post of one didn't show any red at all I thought I'd share this to show what the name comes of.

    Red-winged Starling

The origin of this bird is of Africa from Ethiopia to South Africa. We had noticed the existence of this bird a few years back living in the grounds of the Tang Dynasty Village, Singapore. So this is another escapee that is doing fairly well in the fast changing environment of this city state...

At the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town there is a tourist restaurant and these guys fly onto vacated tables to hover up any tasty leftover morsels
  14. Red Winged Starling - South Africa

Red Winged Starling - South Africa

Red winged Starling photographed Cape of Good Hope. Always a problem with very dark subjects to get some detail and definition - I was lucky with the light.

    Red-winged Starling

This couple were collecting material for the nest. The completely black one is the male and the one with grey head is the female. Note the red mark on the wing that can be seen complete when flying and that give them their name.
