Normally, having blue skies in the background and not framing the whole bird, is seen as something negative in bird photography. B&W, might help to stand out the expression and details on the plumage of this griffon, and improve this image. What do you think?
One of the highlights of the tour we just finished with Greenwings were the Red-necked Nightjars. We had great views and enjoyed the company of Liz and John Cantelo. ...Ah, and two Bonelli's and two Spanish Imperial Eagles were right there as well. Great day!
A Mediterranean Chameleon hiding in a Tamarix during the tour for Greenwings. Other wildlife apart from 150 species of birds, included Orca, Loggerhead Turtle and Two-tailed Pasha, to name a few.
I was trying to take pictures of a coastal landscape, for a change, but this whimbrel kept fishing crabs so close to me I had to set the tele-lens and give it a try. Barely any light, high ISO.
I should be used to it, but every year I'm caught by surprise when hundreds of birds (sometimes thousands) fly above my head. Fall migration has started all of a sudden, and we are witnessing the first white storks and black kites flocks of the season. If you've never been to the Strait of...
A Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) dives in the Strait of Gibraltar to feed on giant squids. Seen from the Aroha Rahi in a spectacular day, thanks to the skilled sailing of Pepe!
One of the most common birds here in the Strait of Gibraltar is the Corn Bunting (Emberiza calandra). They have a distinctive song, that sounds a little bit like jangling keys. Here you have a recording from the fantastic site Xeno-canto so you get to know how they sing...
With the low temperatures of the last few days (well, around 15-20C, can't complain!) the dragonfly season is over until next Spring. However, just a couple of weeks ago there still was some activity and we could see Iberian Bluetails (Ischnura graellsii) copulating.
Two days ago, from a single spot in the Strait of Gibraltar, we saw (Apart from the usual migrants: honey buzzards, booted and short-toed eagles, montagu's and marsh harriers, Egyptian and griffon vultures, ospreys, black kites, sparrowhawks and Peregrine): Rppell's Vulture, Long-legged Buzzard...
Black kites are swarming in and around Tarifa with the strong "Levante" (easterly wind that blows in the western Mediterranean Sea). I got some nice close-ups this morning. Some other raptors are slowly joining in to migration.
They're back! Apart from black kites, we have seen white storks migrating, and also a Great Spotted Cukoo. Also, a Rppell's Vulture was seen last week near Tarifa.
Today a flock of more than 300 white storks just flew above my house. That number is far from the huge flocks of tens of thousands storks that cross the Strait of Gibraltar in August, but still... you can feel the great show of migration has already started. Black kites are starting to cross as...
The White Stork migration has already started! A few hundreds have crossed the Strait of Gibraltar already. The big show, however, will be in a few weeks, when not hundreds, but hundreds of thousands will get together in huge flocks to start their journey to Africa.
Rufous bush robins (also called Rufous-tailed Scrub-Robin) are late breeders and arrive in May to the Mediterranean coast. This one was seen in the Strait of Gibraltar, near Tarifa, where it will stay until September. This is the time to come and see them!
It's always nice to see this little guys. The Little Owl is an abundant but declining species in Spain and the rest of Europe, probably due to the use of pesticides and changes in traditional farming. Have you seen them lately?
Calm weather brings huge numbers of passerines across The Strait of Gibraltar to Europe - More Woodchat Shrikes are arriving on the SW Andalucian coast this week.
Raptors have been streaming across The Strait for the last few weeks with more Short-toed like this beauty who just happened to fly really low and close to me. You could almost hear this stunning raptor breathe!
