Shorebirds give me some trouble, especially since this is March and migration opens up possibilities. Any input appreciated :)
When possible or when I thought helpful, I included multiple shots or perspective shots for estimating size. The last three aren't shore birds, but photographed at area...
I should be used to it, but every year I'm caught by surprise when hundreds of birds (sometimes thousands) fly above my head. Fall migration has started all of a sudden, and we are witnessing the first white storks and black kites flocks of the season. If you've never been to the Strait of...
Back home after a great private tour in Extremadura, Castilla y Leon and Madrid, where we saw close to 200 species. The favorite bird of the tour? The Eurasian Griffon - This one was seen feeding on a carcass this morning near Tarifa thanks to Javi Elorriaga.
Yesterday we enjoyed a good raptor morning, and even though we didn't have the best light, there was some photography frenzy when booted and short-toed eagles were passing nearby. Czech was shooting in burst mode while Giles watched the raptor show in Tarifa.
Two days ago, from a single spot in the Strait of Gibraltar, we saw (Apart from the usual migrants: honey buzzards, booted and short-toed eagles, montagu's and marsh harriers, Egyptian and griffon vultures, ospreys, black kites, sparrowhawks and Peregrine): Rppell's Vulture, Long-legged Buzzard...
One of the four common bulbuls (Pycnonotus barbatus) that could be seen this morning in Tarifa. These are the first common bulbuls that have bred in mainland Europe!
Black kites are swarming in and around Tarifa with the strong "Levante" (easterly wind that blows in the western Mediterranean Sea). I got some nice close-ups this morning. Some other raptors are slowly joining in to migration.
They're back! Apart from black kites, we have seen white storks migrating, and also a Great Spotted Cukoo. Also, a Rppell's Vulture was seen last week near Tarifa.
Today a flock of more than 300 white storks just flew above my house. That number is far from the huge flocks of tens of thousands storks that cross the Strait of Gibraltar in August, but still... you can feel the great show of migration has already started. Black kites are starting to cross as...
This female Montagu's Harrier was ringed as a chick in 2010. We just confirmed her return to the breeding grounds in Tarifa, where she was born. Montagu's harrriers are a vulnerable species and very dependent on nest protection. Thanks to several organizations, individuals and landowners, many...
The White Stork migration has already started! A few hundreds have crossed the Strait of Gibraltar already. The big show, however, will be in a few weeks, when not hundreds, but hundreds of thousands will get together in huge flocks to start their journey to Africa.
Rufous bush robins (also called Rufous-tailed Scrub-Robin) are late breeders and arrive in May to the Mediterranean coast. This one was seen in the Strait of Gibraltar, near Tarifa, where it will stay until September. This is the time to come and see them!
It's always nice to see this little guys. The Little Owl is an abundant but declining species in Spain and the rest of Europe, probably due to the use of pesticides and changes in traditional farming. Have you seen them lately?
Dozens of eurasian griffons (Gyps fulvus) congregated near Tarifa to feast on a dead cow. We could see the whole thing without disturbing them and enjoy a great show. Several other people (not birders) stopped their cars to join us, they were amazed!
