I went along with the Kohala Watershed Partnership crew to Pu'u Pili in Kahua Ranch on Kohala mountain to see some of the interesting plants they've been finding recently. We looked at some large labordia, touchardia, cyrtandra and phyllostegia on Pu'u Pili, which is an old cinder cone at the edge of the ranch pastures within Kahua Ranch. Unfortunately it was quite a short trip. Common birds only - kolea, cattle egret, eurasian skylark, myna, Japanese white-eye, northern cardinal, 'amakihi, 'apapane, 'elepaio.
With what daytime was left I went to Kipuka 'Ainahou on the saddle to get in some bird counts. The weather was clear and calm - perfect for saddle exploring, so it's a shame I wasn't able to be out on Powerline Road. I didn't see any rare birds, but there were plenty of the common species. Some koa are flowering. Some kolea came to the large 1880/1881 'a'a lava flow at sunset, which they often do.
