A case of tick-ity-moo? (1 Viewer)

Not an uncommon sight on our local forest plain, Magpies gleaning ticks from the heads of ancient cattle however, capitalising on the “nether regions” was a new one for me…made my eyes water!😮

I guess the temporary discomfort of having a dangling magpie pecking at your nether regions is worth it for the permanent tick removal!

BTW Ken I thought you lived in London - where is this primeval forest plain with wandering aurochs?!

It’s Chingford Plain (Epping Forest) KB, circa 10 miles from St.Pauls…and very much in London.👍

Magpies are incredibly adaptable! Cleaning parasites off large animals is fairly common, but “targeting” those sensitive areas definitely grabs attention. It’s a great example of how birds take every opportunity for food and ecological mutual benefits.

ps.
I once saw a magpie trying to pick insects out of a horse’s tail – it looked pretty funny. XD I’m always fascinated by how birds interact with animals in their environment. The cattle probably don’t even notice this “partnership.” Nature can be weirdly beautiful, right?
