The Key to Scientific Names
‡ (Fringillidae; Ϯ Maui Nui Gaper A. lutetiae) “Aidemedia, new genus Type species: Aidemedia lutetiae, new species. ... Etymology: To Joan Aidem, resident of Molokai and pioneer collector of fossil birds in the Hawaiian Islands. The word has no relationship with the Greek root aidemon, meaning bashful or modest (cf. Aidemonia, Nectariniidae; Aidemosyne, Estrildidae). The unusual terminal orthography results from our inability to resist creating a palindrome. The name is to be regarded as feminine in gender.” (James & Olson 1991) "Aidemedia James and Olson, 1991, AOU Orn. Monographs, 46, p. 66. Type, by original designation, Aidemedia lutetiae James and Olson, 1991." (JAJ 2020).
