Five species of owl are findable in the Houston area, at least in the winter.

Four resident species, Barn, Barred, Great Horned, and Eastern Screech are well-distributed and not all that hard to find. In established neighborhoods or parks, Barred and screech-owls are plentiful.

Great Horneds like more open country, and they are very common.

In winter, there's the chance for a Short-eared Owl in areas that Northern Harriers cover during the day. The Katy Prairie is as reliable area for this species as we have in the region.

The owls are out there if you're in the field during the right time of day (I usually go out between 4 and 6 a.m. and bird through the daylight hours from there).
