Best sites for Slavonian Grebe (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

Will be heading up to Scotland for a few days next may/June time, and wouldn't mind trying to get some photos of Slavonian Grebe in "full colour." (Normally only get winter plumage ones around here in Norfolk!)
Have been to Loch Ruthven to see them before and was wondering if anyone could recommend any other sites where they show well.
Will hopefully be based around the Aviemore area but that is flexible.

Cheers David |=)|

People should be very careful about publicising breeding sites for Slavs - they've been regularly targeted by eggers in the past, and are also susceptible to disturbance. Probably best stick to private messages if you want to pass on info.

Didn't think of that.

I suppose as i'm new on this site i'll have to prove i'm not an egger just after site info!

David.

We found another 2 breeding sites this year where young were fledged successfully (I was doing bird surveys) which was good as numbers are not improving as much as we would like them too. Best (only?) public site is Loch Ruthven. Sometimes the birds are distant, othertimes right in by the hide. Take a long lens and lots of patience, it'll be worth it to see the birds in breeding plumage up close. I would strongly discourage you from trying to find them on your own David as they are highly protected.
Anyway Ruthven is also good as there are usually other birds about and if you get fed up you can always go bouldering on the Ruthven boulder high on the hill. Maybe see you there! :)

They sometimes get on the floods at Boat of Garten. Leave Boat towards the A9 and look for a car park on your left after the recycling area. Walk 50 yards to the viewing platform where there is a big info panel about the birds.

The floods are also good for wildfowl and waders. Cresties and red squirrels visit the feeders behind you.
