I know Konstantinos is on this forum; but I feel his mail to me should be available to a larger public in these days of gloom, despair and international brouhaha.

Dear David,

I wanted to provide you with some news from Tilos Island in the Aegean periphery.
As you perhaps know, last October I sent a letter with a legal and economic thesis (derived from EU legislation mandatory for all Member States) supporting our island request to the Hellenic government that the government approve the establishment of the Tilos Natural Park. Park establishment would, by its own provisions, prohibit hunting in our Special Protection Area which is a Natura 2000 and EU Life Nature Program site.

The letter and supporting thesis was sent to the Hellenic Prime Minister and 5 Cabinet ministers with relevant jurisdiction over our municipality issues. I received a letter of support for our aim to establish the Park from the Minister of Tourism and another governmental response indicates that the unresolved issues in our SPA will now be addressed after a period of suspension.

The anti-hunting petition with over 1,350 signatures and the messages of support for our cause sent by Bird Forum members to the Hellenic government as a result of your efforts have been invaluable to us on the island.

I want to reiterate to you my deepest appreciation for all of the time and effort which you have devoted to our aims.
I will keep you posted of what I hope will be progress in our continuing efforts this year.

Thank you for posting Konstantinos's letter it is good to know his efforts on Tilos are being rewarded and that members of BirdForum contributed by signing the petition, writing letters etc. it proves petitions etc. can make a difference and I hope this post encourages more members to sign future ones, take part in campaigns etc.
