Bird Strike (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

Does anyone know why we would suddenly be getting a lot of bird strikes on our windows? We have been living in the house since Nov last year with no issues but in the last week we have had birds colliding with windows multiple times every day and sadly one casualty every day. Have put up decals to try and help the birds see the windows but why now all of a sudden is this happening?

Hi Simon and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I've moved your post to the more suitable Bird Behaviour forum, where more people with the expertise will be likely to see it.

Dan is probably correct, that they're young birds lacking experience. It could also be that they can see through to another window so that it looks like a clear pathway through. Putting up decals could help reduce the number.

Is it always the same window?

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Are they adults or possibly recently fledged young?
Dan - A mix we think the two blue tits were recently fledged but the woodpecker this morning was def adult. The others we cant be sure. We did have a woodpecker hit a few days ago but luckily it was just stunned and after a few mins flew off again, that looked like an adult as well.

Delia - Its all around the house, back, front, and side getting strikes, and none of the windows look through to another so I don't think they are seeing a clear pathway. The decals do seem to be working so fingers crossed we don't get more casualties, so distressing.

Just in case they are stunned I am putting them in a box with a towel underneath them in a warm dark room and then checking on them. Is this the right thing to do or is there anything else.

Welcome to Birdforum.

I would leave the birds alone to recover. They will be traumatised by flying into the window and will be even more traumatised if they cannot just fly off once they have recovered.

We have some general guidelines here for the care of injured and baby birds.

This does cover window strikes too. It has some ideas for you.

If you've only been in the house since November, it could be due to the position of the earth/sun at this time of year. We get the same problem and it doesn't last all year. Some of our windows, due to the angle of the sun, actually reflect what looks like open sky in them. Hopefully the decals have some positive effects for you.
