I know this is pretty basic but I would like to know what are the likely species for some of the urban parks in Rome, Florence, and Venice. I have some time scheduled with guide Marco Valtriani in Tuscany but would like to know about these three other possibilities for time off there in March.

Thanks,

BA

Hi,

If you can get your hands on a copy of 'Where to watch birds in world cities', that would put you in good stead for both Rome and Florence, giving you a great range of locations.

In Rome, your best bets are the archaeological areas, like the Colosseum, Forum and Capitoline Hill. There can be found:
blue rock thrush, redstart, black redstart, hooded crow, spotted flycatcher, monk parakeet, ring-necked parakeet, sardinian warbler...also will see blackbird, magpie, robin and other common birds...

In Florence, try along the Po river by the bridges: you get various mammals along there, and also kingfishers and purple herons. I can't remember all the details for these places, but there are scops owl in the boboli gardens.

Hope this helps,

Paul
