Canada gosling behavior (1 Viewer)

Hello,
This is my first post here. I was looking for somewhere to ask a question about Canada geese. I've been following a family here in my local park since April 9th, even earlier since the goose was on her eggs at the end of March. Now the goslings, 6 of them, are like the adults at age 11 wks. I've watched their behavior everyday since they were born. Now I see that they are ready to leave this small lake area. I worry so much about them. They walk way far into the park, almost to a busy road, then turn and run and fly with the goslings. They are getting pretty high and land in the lake or on the grass near it. Today I went to the park at my usual time 6AM to see them, they were gone. I looked all over and saw them nowhere. I drove to a few neighborhood lakes and didn't see them so went back to the usual park. They were there again. They were walking in the parking lot. They got to a dirt area, far away from the lake, turned around again and the gander started running and they all flew again, away from the lake. I thought they were gone, but then I heard honking, louder and louder, and here they were, flying in again and landing in the lake. They all seemed content, went for a swim together, and then went in the shade. I am in Arizona and it is over 105 degrees here now. They were in the shade by the lake around 1PM. I am going to see them this evening, but I am expecting the walking behavior far away from the lake and then the flight back. I am thinking tomorrow morning it will be a longer flight. I am worried about them, there is traffic, people going to work, buildings, cell towers. Is this normal flight behavior for a family of goslings at age 11 weeks. Are the parents gradually beginning longer and longer flights. Should I expect them to leave permanently soon. This little lake normally does not have geese. Sometimes in the evening an egret or heron comes to fish, but not everyday. Thank you for any information you can provide.

Hi lindat and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

It strikes me as being fairly normal behaviour. The adults are strengthening the young ones wing muscles and showing them the landmarks of their natal area. Once the adults feel they are strong enough for the journey, they will take them to where the feeding grounds are for the winter months.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Thank you so much for your response. After 2 1/2 months of watching them daily, I am quite attached. I worry about the city area and hope they can find real nature very soon. They are a marvelous family. The parents are amazing. I helped the goslings survive early on because the goslings could not get out of the lake due to a ledge around the lake. I put in a wood pallet leaning against the edge and the babies learned to use it until they could jump out and that wasn't until they were about 9 weeks old. I also called the town park rangers and they told me they knew about them and would watch them. They are so beautiful! They are almost ready to leave.
