I did try to deter this attack but the setup of our house made it very difficult. I noticed him hanging around that evening and stayed up until about 2:00 a.m. okay well maybe a little bit after 2:00 a.m. to keep the snake away. I used garlic and essential oils and even tried foil to at least know I made an honest attempt. I kind of figured the birds would be okay because they were getting kind of overgrown for the nest and I figured they would fledge soon I just can't remember when they hatched. There were four there were four fledglings and when I played my video in slow motion for my security camera I noticed it looked like all four made it for the next morning he hung out in that potted plant for about 3 hours probably hoping they'd come back. When he slithered away onto the guter he was just a skinny as when he went in. If the flashlights made it through the night there's a cat also I believe working in tandem with this rat snake (I do not own a cat). The parent wrens were very distressed and made attempts to deter the snake away from the nest. Attack occured at 0439 and parents returned at 0515. Will they have been able to locate their fledglings? I do realize when they actually aren't force fledged the parents I believe feed them for about 2 to 4 weeks. You may have to zoom in on video. No harm to snake was done. It's a beneficial snake despite the attempt on the wrens. I know everything has a place in nature. I have several native plant gardens for pollinators and birds.
