Cinnamon Teal x Shoveler Hybrid (2 Viewers)

The local Cinnamon Teal x Shoveler has returned for its sixth winter. It associates with the other shovelers and disappears off for the summer, wintering at RSPB Leighton Moss.

I was puzzling over it possible origins. Whilst duck breeders do like their fancy hybrids this mix seems uncommon in collections. Most references to this particular hybrid come from North America where both birds are native. Three possible origins spring to mind...

1) It is a captive bred bird that has escaped from a collection.
2) A wild European Shoveler has bred with an escaped Cinnanmon Teal.
3) It is a wild North American Hybrid that has ended up on this side of the pond.

My thoughts...

There is absolutely no realistic basis for (3) to be considered a potential origin. The presence of wild bred hybrids within their range simply evidences the potential for hybrids either within captivity where the species mix or alternatively outside of captivity if Cinnamon Teal escapes. The distribution of the hybrids and their rarity means that in essence, a North American origin can be discounted as realistic option. Between (1) and (2), it is a marginal choice.

All the best

Paul

Any chance of a photo?

Cinnamon Teal? The head pattern suggests Blue-winged Teal.

Dave

You can search the Macaulay eBird library for both hybrids & the distinction between calling one or the other appears to be based on upper breast colouration.

Never knew that. I guess with hybrids you can expect almost anything.
