Comparing 4 Options (1 Viewer)

All - I think I have my options narrowed down to four (see below). This will be our first birding camera. Looking for something manageable size and weight wise and with good bird/bird eye autofocus. Reach is important, but I've also considered if a bird is simply too far away, it'll be hard to get a nice shot regardless. Camera would be used for documentation and as we improve with skill - my son would like to use the camera to enter ABA's photography competition each year (low stakes). Would love to hear your thoughts on the four options. We are looking at used gear. Thanks in advance.

I think if you are expecting to go with the OM1-ii, you need to act very fast to get the rebates you have included in the calculations.

As you are new to photography, I would probably think you would have a problem with the prime solution, the added flexibility of a zoom might be worth it to you. On the other hand, the sharpness of the prime should the unsurpassed.

I have personally a setup very similar to the first one you mention, except I have the Panasonic 100-400 lens. This works very well for me, and I would personally not want a heavier setup. In all fairness, I am getting into retirement age :)

Most of my recent additions to the gallery here have been taken with the OM1 setup
I do not think I have fully figured out the best settings yet.
