I'd say pretty much every time of year can be good for birding, but while winter months (and early spring) are mostly preferred, you should also look at target birds, e.g. Bellbirds sing from March/April on and Umbrellabirds become active at their leks. If you want to hear / see those birds you could be disappointed with e.g. a mid-winter visit.
 
We were there Jan 22-Feb 7 this year with Eagle-Eye Tours. Great guides, virtually no bugs. Group id'ed 443 species, I got photos of 359, 203 of which were lifers for me. Temmie is correct, if there are specific birds you are looking for, timing will be more important. I was very happy with our tour and # of species.
