Dartford Warbler near London (1 Viewer)

Hi!

I am next week in London, not for birding. But I would like to see Dartford Warbler. I can spend a day to search them. So I am looking for a place as close as possible to London and accessible with public transport system.

I hope, you can me tell some places.

Cheers!
Martin

Well, it's a 40 minute flight from Gatwick to Jersey. Probably not what you had in mind, but easy to see here, especially now it's stopped raining!

A train to Beaulieu Road (from Waterloo) may be a good bet as the station is very near where I saw them in April. There are probably closer sites such as Thursley Common but a day in the New Forest is always worthwhile.

But Thursley Common looks very nice to me. Thank you!
Do you have a special advices for finding Dartford Warbler (which habitat)?

Cheers,

In the New Forest I would expect to find them in and around Gorse clumps, often there will be Stonechats nearby.

There are sadly no breeding birds left at thursley, and only one pair left at frensham and chobham. Sadly it is quite hard to catch up with them as my year's challenge is to find a Dartford warbler. The suffolk heaths and new forest are fantastic but generally quite difficult to access by train. You could try ashdown forest (but you'd have to get the bus from East grinstead), beautiful site and a few pairs present at the moment. Hastings CP is also very good but again you will need to take the bus. There are birds present closer to London and many at Chobham/Thursley in the winter, so you've visited at the wrong time!!

Good luck!
