Docter 8x30 Deltrintem? (1 Viewer)

A number of years ago I was gifted a pair of Doctor 8x30 porro (?) binoculars by a relative. They seem good quality but I’m going on safari shortly and wondering whether they are suitable (powerful enough) and whether I ought to get them serviced. Also one of the rubber eye cups has torn and I’m struggling to find a replacement.

The Binos are 8x30 Doctor Detrintem.

Looking on the web they seem to be the East German version of the Carl Zeiss models. i suspect they date back to the early 90s.

Does anyone have any thoughts on quality, servicing or (even better) where I can get rubber eye cap replacements. Most similar models I have seen online have hard plastic eyecups of s much shallower profile.

Thanks,
Richard

Docter were indeed the reincarnation of Carl Zeiss Jena. In 2017 Noblex bought Docter, who themselves had taken over the optics business from CZJ in 1991. Noblex still make some binoculars, but I have no idea about their quality. Or whether they will service an old Docter-made Deltrintem. You can always contact them and ask. Otherwise I can only suggest Willem de Boer in the Netherlands, who used to have the Zeiss repair center for BeNeLux afaik. He does do older porros. Whether he has parts for this one ... again, contact him and ask.
At the time the Docter binoculars had a good reputation because their QC, which had been lacking in CZJ, or was sporadic at best, was brough up to snuff.

Hi Ignatius
Thank you very much for such a comprehensive reply. I will follow up as you suggest.
