I would tend towards Common Merganser, due to black back without white scalloping and what looks to be a very elongated body in the left bird.

I would go along with this. I don't see Goldeneye here.

Hello Victor,
as usual I hesitate to comment on NA-birds, but if the choice is between the two species, both are Common Mergansers and no Goldeneyes to me. More, when the picture was taken in Europe, I would change to quizz-modus and write, I would put my money on Common Mergansers for both birds.
Its just a jizz/gut feeling, but I cant see anything wrong for this species here, especially when picture quality is taken into account, removing any colour sheen that might be present (no offense as always)

edit: but yes, this only quiz modus and it helps that Aeshna and US-based Birdmeister have voted for this.

Agree on common merganser due to body shape and plain black and white coloration without the sccapular pattern of common goldeneye.
