Eagle Owl? (1 Viewer)

Dear knowledgeable,

I believe I’ve caught an image of an eagle owl. Sorry for the low quality but I walked into my garden and there it was. Hunting, successfully, bats. I watched for half an hour. Beautiful. But if anyone knows better then I’d like to know. Region: Spain.

Unless that's a truly huge lamp, or I've got the perspective all wrong, it looks pretty small for eagle owl. A few more photos - or, better, a video?? - might help.

Hahaha, not a lot. If you've got more stuff it would be best just to post it. But my first guess would be tawny owl.

Hi. Agree, looks a bit too small for an Eagle, you can just see the tufts (ears), so could be a Long-eared?

I wouldn't guarantee that. Just as/more likely leaves on the tree behind.

If this is Majorca then I think you are right about no tawnies, there are, if I'm correct, long eared owls and looking at that image I'd go with Mike and say long eared owl.

IIRC there are no Eagle owls either on Mallorca? But not sure where the location is?

The underwing on the poor quality video points to either a Long-eared Owl or a Short-eared Owl. Given the time of day and habitat I favour LEO 🫤

Converting video photograms in pictures shows whitish underwing, ear-like protrusion from the head and orangish eyes, so... Long-eared Owl
