Greater Flamingos on Corfu (2 Viewers)

Hi there,

I have been to Corfu two weeks ago, a trip report will follow. When I visited the Lefkimi salt pans (near the small village of Alikés), I have seen about 80 Greater Flamingos there. Most local people told me they knew nothing about the Flamingos, they were astonished about hearing of them.

Did anybody of you see Flamingos in these salt pans before? I wonder: Are the locals not aware of their islands' bird life or have the Flamingos just "conquered" the Lefkimi salt pans as their new home?

Tschüß,
Gaby

Hey Gaby!

Not suprised that they didn't know about the Flamingos. Most Greeks take straight F's when it comes to nature and .(of course the birds)

As for the Flamingos, they have been visiting Corfu for many years (I think they also attemted to breed there) and they have occured around the island at varius stages, including Lefkimi.

Hope this helped,

Dimitris.

Hi Dimitris,

thank you for your helpful message. I provide a (German) website which contains photos and information on my holiday trips. In the Corfu trip report I would like to mention the Flamingos. Therefore your comment indeed is very helpful.

I feel sorry about the Greeks' attitude, but most Germans also don't care about nature and birds. They don't even know the difference between swallows and swifts. For them, everything that flys around in towns is a swallow. :eek!:

Thanks for your welcome to the forum. I really hope I will find the time to write here. In fact I am very busy at the moment with my own forum. Together with three other ladies I provide a wild bird aid website and forum (in German only), and at the moment we have so much work due to the nesting season of most bird species around here.

Tschüss,
Gaby
