Hi all this Grebe was miles away from the causeway today and the pic is heavily cropped, I saw several Little grebes closer in, there was a Black-necked Grebe reported yesterday, looking at the small fine bill and steep forehead could this be a Black-necked Grebe or is it just a Little Grebe distorted by distance, it was so far away I couldn't decide in the scope! Thanks in advance.

Thanks thought the colouration was better for LG just though shape of head and bill better for BNG. But thanks for confirming LG
Cannot make out the bill, basing it mostly on the dark cap. Typically Black-necked grebes have dark or dusky ear coverts while Little grebes have a cap that does not cover the area (cap only just covering the eye and becoming thinner from the eye to the back of the head).

Podiceps are NOT my thing, however I’m seeing a dark collar, a relatively steeper forehead, and as best as I can make out… a fine thin bill, perhaps BNG might be a better candidate?

Cheers

Yes it was the bill and steep forehead that made me think BNG.

capped appearamce and brownish colour.
I'm not sure it is a cap seems to be more on the front of the face as well, could it not be a juv BNG with buffish tones, I think the bill to head proportion is wrong for LG and the steepness of the forehead! Blooming miles away so possibly all features are distorted somewhat in the pic either way!!

What magnification or scope were you using? Abbeton is a location that no one has enough magnification!

Peter
The pic was at 600mm cropped down a lot! Taken from Layer Breton causeway, but the bird was closer to the other one😀 my scope is pretty good, ATS 80 ,but the light was terrible as well !! I thought at the time BNG but maybe I was just being hopeful! There were several LG about but a lot closer so easier to ID !
