is anyone here familiar with Darwin's finches ? i'm guessing the attached is a small ground finch (Geospiza fuliginosa) but i could well have it mixed up with another type of ground finch

meaning that I can't improve on my identification except for adding a question mark to indicate a provisional identification ?

Not quite that bad, but in addition to size you also need to look at shape. On your photo, the upper edge of the culmen is almost straight and the bill is much longer than it is high. For medium ground finch as I remember it, the bill has to have a curved culmen, it is still longer than it is high at the base, but not to the same extent as with your photo. So you could have a bird with the curved culmen and the overall proportions that would still be a medium ground finch even though it is not as big a bill as this one.
