Hatchling ID (1 Viewer)

Hello, I am wondering if anyone can identify these hatchlings. Brought to someone's house by their cat, straight from a nest but absolutely no idea of where the nest is. Birds were handled by cat owner, who then brought them to me. National rescue organisation advised me to 'let nature take its course' ie let the birds die. They are uninjured but probably only a day old. They are quite big, about 3 inches long excluding legs, legs are probably another 1.5/2 inches long. Photos attached. Just looking for anyone's best idea of what these birds might be. TIA!20230426_151623.jpg20230425_202756.jpg

Hi Pam and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I've moved your post to the ID forum in the hopes someone there can help. Can you say what part of the country they are.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Apologies! I am in West Central Scotland

Oh!! Welcome Pam. There's a quite a few of us in Scotland. I'm in Blairgowrie.

So sort of east central Scotland... the A9 divides us LOL

Ah!! Don't really know that part too well... I do my best to avoid cities nowadays LOL. The most I do is drive the M80/M74 when heading south.

We sometimes have a Birdforum Bash with members meeting up to look for what birds are around... so keep an eye open for threads titled something like Scottish Bash. They've always been great fun. Sadly we seem to have got out of the habit over the last few years but you never know. All things Scottish can be found here: Scotland

Here's a website for filtering American, not European, hatchlings by their characteristics: Altricial | Chick Types |. However, House Sparrow looks like a good match: House Sparrow |. If others confirm, I hope this site helps: Rehabber's Den | The House Sparrow Passer domesticus - Nesting, Orphan Care and Rehabilitation and Rehabber's Den |The House Sparrow Passer domesticus - Nesting, Orphan Care and Rehabilitation - page 2. Or maybe try contacting another bird rescue organisation?

EDIT: This is better advice than mine:
