First of all wishing all of you Happy and Healthy New Year and of course, happy birding. I need a help with IDing this beauty that i just saw in Rijeka, Croatia. If it is what i think it is, that would be simple AMAZING seeing for this region. Thank you all for your help!!!

Hello, Zach! Great observation of the bunting, indeed!
Since this is rare species in Croatia, please report it to the Croatian institute of ornithology to this e-mail: [email protected]

Thanks and all the best,
Josip Ledinšćak

Thank you very much for your warm welcome!! Here is today's news. Little Bunting is still around, what is just simply beyond my understanding. Delia Todd, i know we all "get lost sometimes", people and birds, what is kind of sort "normal". But i have a question for you. Since Little Bunting is a thousands and thousands of miles away from where it should be, do you have at least theory how does this happens? In Rijeka isn't even close for temperatures to be cold or subcold and there is no any surroundings that will "fit" Bunting needs. I mean if there was a flock of them, it would be more (maybe!!) understandable. Recently i did see Snow Bunting in Rijeka region, what was actually "understandable", because was chilly day and not far away were mountains. Trying to figured out on my own, but it doesn't working. Maybe you have some "answers" or it could be just one of those things that simply doesn't have an answers.Thank you!

In spring 2020 we had at least 2 , perhaps 3 little Buntings in Braunschweig , federal state Lower Saxony, Germany.
When checking up on the occurrence in Central Europe it seemed the species is slowly becoming more common here...also others stated that overwintering of this species in Europe seems to become more common ...

Short paper on Braunschweig observations here:

Little Bunting is a rare but regular migrant and wintering species in most of Europe. It breeds in Scandinavia and European Russia so it is not that far out of range. A small part of the population migrates in a different direction than the main population, resulting in such occurrences. This may be due to navigational errors or possibly the establishment of a new migration route. A paper was published in Dutch Birding in 2021 on wintering of Little Bunting in Europe and North Africa. From what I can tell this is the 6th record for Croatia.
