Good Morning all. I joined because I am an avid bird observer. Not a binocular watcher but enjoy seeing birds of all types in my travels throughout NC.
My work base is across from The Biltmore Estate forest, so that brings in loads of protected wildlife and sometimes they share themselves with us. Yesterday I saw a pair of gorgeous Pileated Woodpeckers, but had a question.
When flying do you see white epaulettes on these birds? I don't ever remember seeing large white shoulder patches. Is this common? Thanks, for the information.

Hi Bunierose and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

This is a picture from our Gallery of a Pileated in flight.... is that what you're seeing: Take off

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

A warm welcome to you from me in South Carolina. Please join in whenever you like ๐Ÿ‘

Hi, welcome to the forum. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group. I canโ€™t help with your question as I have not yet seen a Pilieated, I sure hope to some day.
